Event Objective

The City of Surrey partnered with Off the Reel to increase community engagement at the annual Surrey Fusion Festival, a free two-day celebration of global cultures. With thousands of attendees across all age groups, the goal was to offer an interactive photo experience that could move with the crowd — creating dynamic, shareable content in real time.

Strategic Approach

To align with the festival’s open and energetic layout, Off the Reel deployed a Roaming Photo Booth equipped with Boomerang capabilities, allowing for short, looping video captures instead of static photos. This mobile solution allowed our team to seamlessly move through the crowds, bringing the experience directly to guests wherever they were in the park.

Team members wore official City of Surrey t-shirts, making it easy for guests to identify them and trust the activation. As they approached guests, they offered quick and fun Boomerang recordings that could be instantly sent via text — a strategy that not only increased engagement but also encouraged organic social media sharing.

With an estimated 15,000 people attending over the two-day festival, the roaming format was the ideal solution to meet guests where they were. From food vendors to performance stages, our mobile team ensured the photo experience was accessible, interactive, and woven seamlessly into the flow of the event.

Key Activations

1. Roaming Photo Booth with Boomerangs
Our fully mobile roaming booth enabled staff to engage guests across the entire venue without being confined to a fixed location. The Boomerangs added a fun, kinetic energy to the photos, making them more shareable and exciting than traditional stills.

2. Instant Sharing via Text
Each guest could immediately receive their Boomerang via text message, allowing them to share it on social platforms or keep it as a fun memento of the day.

3. Branded Community Engagement
Wearing City of Surrey shirts helped legitimize the experience and gave it an official presence. This small but strategic touch fostered trust, made guests more receptive to participation, and reinforced the City’s involvement in creating memorable experiences for its residents.

Results

The roaming booth activation proved highly effective, with hundreds of guests capturing spontaneous Boomerangs throughout the festival grounds. The ease of access and mobility meant the experience came to the people — whether they were enjoying food, watching performances, or exploring cultural displays.

Because Boomerangs are highly shareable, many attendees posted their videos on social media, helping to extend the event’s reach beyond the park and generate positive visibility for both the City of Surrey and the Surrey Fusion Festival.

Impact

This activation demonstrated how a simple, well-executed roaming photo experience can become a powerful engagement tool. The flexibility of the roaming booth allowed for meaningful interaction across all areas of the festival, while the energy of Boomerangs matched the celebratory nature of the event.

By prioritizing approachability, fun, and instant sharing, Off the Reel helped the City of Surrey connect authentically with its community and add a digital dimension to an already vibrant in-person experience.
